Dopo aver recensito il fantastico "Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed" (qui il link alla recensione), abbiamo potuto scambiare quattro chiacchiere con Lasse Pyykkö, fondatore e mastermind dell'oscura Death/Doom band finalndese Hooeded Menace.

- Ciao Lasse e benvenuto sulle pagine di Allaroundmetal
Ciao, grazie per avermi ospitato.

- “Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed” è ormai uscito qualche giorno fa: come sono stati i riscontri sinora?
Abbastanza sorprendenti, in realtà. So che abbiamo fatto un buon disco, ma questa grande risposta mi ha un po’ sorpreso. È l’album coi migliori feedback sin dai tempi di “Never Cross the Dead”, che è spesso considerato il nostro miglior album.

- Questo è il primo album con il nuovo vocalist, Harri Kuokkanen: com’è stato lavorare con lui?
Piacevole. Ha voce e musicalità per portare a termine grandi risultati. Ci troviamo anche sul piano personale.

- Dopo che avete registrato “Ossuarium...” sono entrati in formazione Antti Poutanen al basso e Otso Ukkonen alla batteria. Si sono già integrati bene?
Sì, andiamo tutti d’accordo e loro hanno portato energie fresche e nuovo entusiasmo alla band.

- Nella recensione ho affermato che il vostro è un sound riconoscibile al primissimo ascolto. Quali sono state le influenze che vi hanno portati ad avere questo tipo di sonorità?
I Candlemass degli anni ‘80, i primi due lavori dei Paradise Lost (così come il loro nuovo album), il primo album e i demo dei Cathedral, primi Anathema e My Dying Bride, vecchi Katatonia, Winter, Trouble, gli Iron Maiden e i Metallica degli 80’s, Black Sabbath…

- A tal proposito, oltre le atmosfere oscure ed alla compattezza del vostro sound, in “Ossuarium...” sembrano esserci ancor più sfumature melodiche… mi sbaglio?
Sì, sono d’accordo che il nuovo album è più melodico e malinconico. Sembra che ogni nuovo album sia sempre più melodico del precedente. Non penso possa continuare così per sempre – non con una band come noi.  Ad un certo punto potrebbe diventare scadente ed inutile ed eventualmente qualcosa di veramente essenziale potrebbe andare perso.

- Trovo che la cover del disco è pressoché perfetta nel coniugarsi al vostro sound ed al concept. Cosa puoi dirci al riguardo?
Sì, sono d’accordo. Adam Burke ha creato qualcosa che calza a pennello con le atmosfere dell’album. Gli abbiamo dato qualche linea guida ed i testi, se ricordo bene, e ha preso tutto da lì, costruendolo ed azzeccandoci. La copertina riflette l’oscura poetica e le sognanti/angosciose vibrazioni dell’album. È venuto tutto assieme.

- Per le tematiche vi rifate soprattutto all’immaginario dei film Horror, giusto? Soprattutto la saga dei Resuscitati Ciechi. È alla base anche del vostro ultimo album?
Non è alla base dell’album. I film Horror, anche la saga di Blind Dead, ancora c’ispirano sicuramente, ma funzionano più come un punto di partenza per accendere il precesso. Nel processo di scrittura l’idea originaria o l’ispirazione possono diventare velati o scomparire del tutto per idee più convincenti. Può andare ovunque finché ha la giusta atmosfera. I testi sono su sensazioni ed atmosfere e tu li puoi interpretare a modo tuo. È ancora tutto radicato in tematiche cupe ed angoscianti, è solo un approccio diverso. Stessa cosa con il nostro precedente album, “Darkness Drips Forth”.

- Cosa è cambiato e cosa no negli Hooded Menace in tutti questi anni? È che ascoltando “Ossuarium...” si ha l’impressione che dopo 10 anni di attività tu abbia sempre mantenuto inalterato il cuore del progetto.
Beh, la formazione è cambiata un paio di volte (ride). Siamo diventati più melodici nel corso degli anni, ma non abbiamo mai perso l’essenza più profonda della band. Ci sono sempre queste oscure e sinistre atmosfere nella musica che suoniamo. È sempre pesante e senza compromessi. Puoi aggiungere melodie e quant’altro, ma l’essenza del sound rimane sempre la stessa – finora almeno. Naturalmente, poiché la musica della band si è diffusa sempre di più, i concerti e i tour sono migliori, o almeno dovrebbero esserlo, il budget per le registrazioni è migliore, la promozione è migliore etc. Le cose si sono fatte piàù serie, ma comunque è dvertente come prima se non di più. In realtà è più divertente ora. Mi godo i cambi musicali che arrivano lungo la strada, è divertente che si sia sempre qualcosa nei piani… Sì, è stato un bel viaggio finora.

- Spostandoci un attimo ad un altro argomento, c’è una cosa di cui sono sempre stato estremamente curioso e questa è la prima volta che ho la possibilità di poterlo chiedere: com’è vissuto il Metal in Finlandia?
Come saprai, il Metal è un genere mainstream in Finlandia. Grandi realtà underground come i Beherit possono entrare nella classifica degli album venduti, ma naturalmente le bands di livello più underground sono ancora molto sotto la terra. Ma ci sono un sacco di shows per chiunque e la gente è attiva ed entusiasta. È molto bello che i gruppi finlandesi siano finalmente presi seriamente all’estero così come in patria. Non era così in passato. Non direi che questo fenomeno è eccezionale, solo perché la maggior parte del mainstream metal è davvero una musica terribile. Preferirei molto di più sentire un pop-hit degli anni '80 alla radio rispetto ad un altro gruppo heavy metal, ma credo di poterci convivere con questo (ride).

- Dalla vostra nazione tra l’altro provengono moltissimi gruppi a dir poco fantastici. Ce n’è qualcuno che ti piace particolarmente? E qualche band, magari non molto conosciuta oltre i vostri confini, che ti sentiresti di consigliare?
Sì, ci sono un mucchio di bands metal che mi piacciono molto come Xysma, Funebre, Disgrace, Abhorrence, Tarot (primo album), Reverend Bizarre, Thergothon, Beherit, primi Sentenced e Amorphis, Rippikoulu e così via. Penso mi piaccia maggiormente la roba vecchia, ma la scena odierna anche è buona. Non sono così entusiasta invece delle maggiori esportazioni finlandesi di heavy metal.

- Prima di chiudere, una domanda quasi d’obbligo. Cosa c’è in programma nel prossimo futuro? È in vista un tour in supporto ad “Ossuarium...”?
Speriamo di girare l’Europa con il nuovo album quest’estate, ma ancora nulla è certo. Di sicuro c’è che suoneremo “Fulfill the Curse” per il suo decimo anniversario al Roadburn (Olanda) ed al Kill-Town Death Fest (Danimarca). Poi è in programma anche il North of the Wall Festival (Gran Bretagna) e a fine marzo suoneremo in apertura agli Electric Wizard ad Helsinki, Finlandia. Ce ne saranno di più, ma questo è quanto per cominciare.

- Hi Lasse and welcome on Allaroundmetal
Hi, thanks for having me!

- “Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed” was released a few days ago: how were the responses so far?
Quite amazing, actually. I know we made a good record but this great response surprised me a bit. It´s the best feedback since “Never Cross the Dead” which is often considered our best album. 

- This is the first album with new vocalist, Harri Kuokkanen: how was working with him?
Easy. He´s got a voice and musicality to pull it off with great results. Things click on personal level too. 

- After you recorded "Ossuarium...", Antti Poutanen (bass) and Otso Ukkonen (drums) joined the band. Did they integrate yet?
Yeah, we are all getting along fine and they have brought some fresh energy and enthusiasm to the band. 

- In the review I wrote that your music is identifiable at the very first listening. Which are the influences who brought you to have this sound?
80´s Candlemass, first two Paradise Lost albums (digging their new album as well), first Cathedral album + demo, early Anathema and My Dying Bride, old Katatonia, Winter, Trouble, 80´s Iron Maiden and Metallica, Black Sabbath…. 

- Speaking of which, besides the dark atmospheres and the roughness on your sound, on "Ossuarium..." I found some more Melodic hints... am I right?
Yeah, I agree the new album is more melodic and melancholic. Seems like every new album is more melodic than its predecessor. I don´t think it can continue like this forever though - not with a band like us. At some point it´ll become cheesy and pointless and eventually something very essential will be lost. 

- To me the cover art is perfect to combining with music and themes. Could you say something about?
Yes, I agree. Adam Burke created something that totally fits the atmosphere of the album. We gave him some guidelines and lyrics too, if I remember correctly, and he took it from there, build on it and nailed it. The cover art resonates with the album´s darkly poetic and dreamy/nightmarish vibe. It all comes together. 

- About themes, you take inspiration to Horror movies, right? Especially the Blind Dead Saga. Is it the base of this album, too?
It´s not the base of the album. The horror movies, also the Blind Dead, still inspire us indeed but they function more as just a starting point to spark the process. In the writing process the original idea or inspiration can get veiled or totally vanished for the more compelling ideas. It can go anywhere as long as its got the right vibe to it. The lyrics are all about feel and atmosphere and you can interpret them in your own way. It´s still rooted in all things gloomy and nightmarish, it´s just a different approach. Same thing with our previous album “Darkness Drips Forth”.

- What's changed and what's not in Hooded Menace in all these years? 'Cause listening to "Ossuarium...", I think that you still keep unchanged the core of the project.
Well, the line-up has changed a couple of times (laughs)! We´ve got more melodic along the years but we have never lost the deepest essence of the band. There´s always this dark and menacing vibe to the music we play. It´s always heavy and never compromised. You can add melodies and whatnot but the core sound remains the same - so far at least. Of course as the band´s music has spread wider and wider the gigs and tours are better, or at least should be, the recording budgets are better, the promotion is better etc. Thing gets more serious but it´s still just as much fun as before if not more. Actually it is funnier now. I enjoy the musical challenges that come along the way, it´s fun that there´s always something in plans… Yeah, it´s been a good trip so far.

- Moving on to another argument just for a moment, there's something I've always been extremely curious about and this is my first chance to ask to someone. It's about Metal in Finland: how is experienced?
As you might know, metal is mainstream music in Finland. Bigger underground acts such as Beherit can hit the album charts but of course the more underground-level bands are still very much under the ground. But there are loads of shows for everyone and people are active and enthusiastic. It´s pretty cool that Finnish metal bands are finally taken seriously abroad as well as in their home country. That wasn´t the case back in the day. I wouldn’t say this phenomenon is only great because most of the mainstream metal is really awful music. I´d much rather hear any cheesy 80´s pop hit from the radio than another bad heavy metal band, but I guess I can live with that (laughs). 

- From your Country came a lot of great bands, I think. There are some that you like most? Or some - not famous out of your borders - that you like to suggest?
Yeah, there´re plenty of metal bands that I like very much such as Xysma, Funebre, Disgrace, Abhorrence, Tarot (first album), Reverend Bizarre, Thergothon, Beherit, early Sentenced and Amorphis, Rippikoulu and so forth. I guess I like mainly the old stuff but the current scene is good too. I´m not so excited about the biggest Finnish heavy metal exports though. 

- Before we close, an usual question: what's next? There will be a tour supporting your last release?
We hope to tour Europe for the new album in the summer but nothing´s set in stone yet. Sure thing is that we´ll play “Fulfill the Curse” the 10 year anniversary sets at Roadburn (NL) and Kill-Town Death Fest (DK). Then there´s also North of the Wall festival (UK) lined-up and in late March we´ll be opening for Electric Wizard in Helsinki, Finland. There´ll be more but that´s it for the starters.
