Allaroundmetal.com ha contattato Ferran Quiles, cantante degli spagnoli Theragon per parlare del loro debut album “Where the Stories Begin”; ecco cosa ci ha raccontato.
AAM: Ciao Ferran e grazie per essere qui con noi di allaroundmetal.com! Siete una band nuova per il panorama metal, vi va di raccontarci la storia dei Theragon?
FQ: Ciao amici! Innanzitutto, grazie mille per averci qui, è un grandissimo piacere! Siamo i Theragon, una band Power Metal di Valencia (Spagna) nata nel 2018. Siamo solo cinque amici che amano il Power Metal melodico e l’Epic Fantasy, così abbiamo deciso di dare il nostro contributo ad entrambi i mondi, e nel dicembre del 2020 è uscito il nostro debut album “Where the Stories Begin””
AAM: La scena metal spagnola è da sempre ricca di tantissime validissime band; c’è qualcuna tra esse che è stata fondamentale per la vostra crescita di musicisti? Ed altre fuori dai confini della Spagna?
FQ: Senza alcun dubbio, Opera Magna. È una delle maggiori influenze ed allo stesso tempo uno dei nostri gruppi preferiti di sempre, sono veramente unici. E siamo cresciuti ascoltando i Rhapsody, quindi sono anche loro nel nostro DNA!
AAM: Ho trovato la vostra musica accostabile ai primissimi Avantasia (quelli delle due Metal Opera), ma anche alla teatralità ed eleganza delle varie incarnazioni dei Rhapsody. Sei d’accordo con questi paragoni e secondo te con quale altra band potreste essere accostabili?
FQ: Infatti! Noi amiamo queste bands ed abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stato così interessante usare questa teatralità per raccontare le nostre storie epiche. D’altro canto, la nostra musica è influenzata da molti grandi gruppi come Freedom Call, Gloryhammer, Twilight Force... È kitsch? Allora ci siamo dentro!
AAM: Parliamo di “Where the Stories Begin”, c’è per caso un concept alla base dei testi e chi si occupa della loro stesura?
FQ: Sì, era molto importante per noi creare una storia originale per quest’album, basato sul nostro mondo di fantasia, Theragon. La storia parla del monomito di Ariel, una giovane guerriera nata nella famiglia Blazeborn ed il suo viaggio per porre fine alla Guerra Eterna che sta massacrando la sua famiglia sin dall’alba dei tempi. Vale la pena notare che questo non è solo un racconto Fantasy, ma descrive anche la vera anima dell’umanità e come può essere corrotta dal potere. L’intero concept è stato scritto da me.
AAM: Come nascono invece le musiche dei Theragon? E’ un lavoro collettivo oppure c’è qualcuno fra voi che fa tutto?
FQ: Ho scritto quasi tutte le canzoni dell’album, visto che ho sviluppato la storia ed il concept dietro ad esso, ed abbiamo sempre cercato di legare musica e liriche per accrescere la teatralità delle nostre canzoni. Alex (chitarre) ha scritto “Theragon”, l’opening track dell’album.
AAM: Tornando all’album, chi ha realizzato lo splendido artwork e quale legame ha con i testi?
FQ: La copertina è stata illustrata dal Dave Machado (Rhapsody, Blind Guardian, Rage…) e raffigura la scena dell’arrivo di Ariel al castello del Dragone Rosso, pronta a compiere la profezia e porre fine a tutto il dolore!
AAM: Ho notato che ogni tanto vi concedete qualche digressione in generi diversi dal symphonic metal, come in “Drunk Dwarf Inn” in cui vi avvicinate al folk, o in “Am I” in cui strizzate l’occhio all’hard rock. Come mai queste differenze?
FQ: Prima di tutto, da scrittore, è divertente fondere stili differenti e mescolare elementi differenti, rende l’intero processo più dinamico. Ma questa è solo una conseguenza del dare ai testi così tanto potere, quindi stanno effettivamente definendo la musica stessa. “Drunk Dwarf Inn” parla di una locanda in cui tutti gli eroi vanno a bere e divertirsi, quindi avevamo ovviamente bisogno di queste atmosfere folk per migliorare l’esperienza ed immergere l’ascoltatore dentro la storia. Lo stesso per “Am I”, una canzone molto intima e sarebbe strano se fosse fatta in uno Speed Power a 160 bpm. Quindi abbiamo voluto creare quest’aura profonda, che è diventata una cazone molto speciale.
AAM: Avete scelto di realizzare la cover di “Never Gonna Give You Up” di Rick Astley, cantante molto differente dal tuo stile. Non ho trovato molto convincente questa scelta, proprio per queste evidenti differenze, cosa vi ha spinto a realizzare questa cover piuttosto che un’altra?
FQ: Noi amiamo molto le cover Power Metal di canzoni non-Power Metal, invece che delle solite cover che puoi sentire in altri album. Quindi perché non “rick-rollare*” i nostri ascoltatori? Ed ha anche uno scopo di marketing, visto che le cover diventano virali su YouTube, quindi magari un giorno ci faremo un video

AAM: Inevitabile parlare della situazione derivante dalla pandemia mondiale in atto; qui in Italia tutta la scena live è completamente paralizzata, come si vive in Spagna questa situazione? Ed i Theragon come la stanno vivendo in particolare?
FQ: Ad essere onesti, fa totalmente schifo, ma è con questo che dobbiamo convivere. È così triste vedere tutto il settore in pausa, i festival cancellati, locali che chiudono… e speriamo che questo possa finire presto per riprendere tutte le attività musicali di cui il settore ha disperatamente bisogno. Nel nostro caso, abbiamo dovuto cancellare il nostro primo concerto di Giugno 2020 ed ovviamente non abbiamo potuto presentare ancora con uno show il nostro debut album, ma stiamo lavorando perché ciò diventi possibile e nel frattempo altra nuova musica è in movimento.
AAM: Una domanda che mi piace fare sempre alla prima intervista per allaroundmetal.com. Stai partendo per un lungo viaggio e puoi portare solo 3 cd della tua collezione, quale scegli e perché?
FQ: Scelta difficile hehe… Io sceglierei sempre per primo “Highway to Hell” degli AC/DC, visto che è il primo CD che abbia mai comprato e la ragione per cui ho cominciato con la musica. Dopodiché, “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son” degli Iron Maiden, un must per me, ed il mio album Power Metal preferito in assoluto: “Eternity” dei Freedom Call.

AAM: Hi guys and thanks for joining us on allaroundmetal.com! you're a brand new band on the Metal scene, would you tell us your story?
FQ: Hello mates! First of all, thank you very much for having us here, it’s such a pleasure. We’re Theragon, a power metal band from Valencia (Spain) born in 2018. We are just 5 friends that love melodic power metal and epic fantasy, so we decided to make our own contribution to both worlds, and in December 2020 our debut album “Where the Stories Begin” came out!
AAM: Spanish Metal scene is full of many good bands; are there some of them who was important for you to growing up as musicians? Other bands behinf the Spanish borders?
FQ: With no doubt, Opera Magna. It’s one of our biggest influences and at the same time it’s one of our favorite bands ever, they are really one of a kind. And we have grown listening to Rhapsody, so it’s now in our DNA too!
AAM: I find that your music is near to the earliest Avantasia (of the two Metal Operas), but also to Rhapsody because of theatricality and elegance. Do you agree with these comparisons and according to you which bands inspired you the most?
FQ: Indeed! We absolutely love those bands, and we thought that it would be so interesting to use this theatricality in order to tell our epic stories. On the other side, our music is influenced by many great bands such as Freedom Call, Gloryhammer, Twilight Force... Is it cheesy? So we’re in!
AAM: Let's talk about "Where the Stories Begin": is there a concept behind the lyrical themes and who wrote'em?
FQ: Yes, it was so important for us to create an original story for this album, based on our fantasy world “Theragon”. The story tells the monomyth of Ariel, a young warrior born in the Blazeborn family, and her way to finally end the Eternal War that is slaughtering her family since the beginning of times. It’s worth noting that this is not just a fantasy tale, but it also describes the true soul of mankind and how can they be corrupted by power. The whole concept was written by Ferran, singer of the band.
AAM: Is there anybody in particular arrangin Theragon's music? Is it a common work or just one of you writing all?
FQ: Ferran has written almost every song in the album, as he developed the story and the concept behind our debut album, and we always try to bond music and lyrics to raise the theatricality of our songs. Alex (guitars) also wrote Theragon, the opening track of the album.
AAM: Who did the awesome cover and what bond does it have with the lyrics?
FQ: The cover was illustrated by Felipe Machado (Rhapsody, Blind Guardian, Rage...), and it depicts the scene where Ariel arrives to the castle of the Red Dragon, ready to fulfill the prophecy and end with all pain!
AAM: I noticed that sometimes you 're influenced also by something different from Symphonic Metal, like on the tracks "Drunk Dwarf Inn" which have some Folk influences, or "Am I" that sound more Hard Rock. Why these differences?
FQ: First of all, as a writer, it’s so much fun to blend differents styles and to mix different elements, it makes the whole process so much dynamic. But this is just a consequence of giving the lyrics so much power, so they are actually defining the music itself. “Drunk Dwarf Inn” talks about an inn where all heroes drink and have fun, so we obviously needed this folky feeling to enhance the whole experience and immerse the listener into the story. The same for “Am I”, it’s such an intimate song, it would be strange if it was a 160bpm speed power metal song. So we wanted to create this deep aura, which turned into such an special song.
AAM: You made a cover of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", a singer very different from your Ferran Quiles. That song didn't impresse me, just due to these clear differences; why did you make this cover instead of an average other one?
FQ: We really love power metal covers of non-power metal songs, rather than the classic covers that you can see in other albums. So why not “rick-roll” our listeners? And it also has a marketing purpose, as these covers can go viral on youtube, so we will try in the future with a music video maybe.
AAM: It's inevitable to talk about the Covid situation. Here, in Italy, live shows are totally stilled; how do you live the pandemic situation in Spain? And how you Theragon in particular?
FQ: This totally sucks, to be honest, but it’s what we have to live. It’s so sad to see all the industry paused, festivals canceled, venues closing... and we hope this can end soon to resume all music activity, as the industry needs it desperately. In our case, we had to cancel our first concert in June 2020, and we obviously couldn’t make a presentation show of our debut album yet, but we are working to make this possible and meanwhile, some more music is on the go!
AAM: This one is a questione I always ask, expecially in a first interview on allaroundmetal.com: you're going to a long travel and you can bring only three CDs from your collection: which would you choose and why?
FQ: Tough decission hehe I will always choose first Highway to Hell (AC/DC) as it was my first CD ever bought and the reason I started with this music. After that, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (Iron Maiden) is a must for me, and my favorite power metal album of all time: Eternity (Freedom Call).
