[English version below]

--------------------

Chi sono i "Wolves of Karelia"?
Possiamo sicuramente dirlo!

Opinione mia, questo pezzo è il fulcro principale dell'album: "Death walks towards you in these woods/And turns this forest into a pyre" o "Lead them into the wild/Cut their line of supply/Prevent them from reinforcing the lines/Wait for the cold/Let ferocious breeze pierce to their bones/Death walks our trail as we go forth".

-, e ci sono canzoni con titoli come "Born from Fire" e "Horizon on Fire", o ancora versi come "Withstand and Defy/Cold flame of the winter" ("Hail of Steel").

With blood on your hands/Baptized as a murderer/Death toll as a cross/Reborn as a ruthless Executioner".

The fires scorched this earth/From the ashes we unearth/Our fallen brothers/We bring them home/Each one forged into a stone/Each name to be remembered").

[English version]

- Hi Tuomas and welcome to Allaroundmetal.com. First of all, thanks for your time. Can we say that "Wolves of Karelia" is a concept album about the Winter War (1939-1940)? Who are the Wolves of Karelia?
We definitely can say that! The wolves of Karelia are the Finnish soldiers who fought in the winter war.

- How’s about its genesis? I mean, the lyrics seem very accurate to me; did you talk with some veterans or something?
I did not talk directly to any of the veterans. Not many are alive anymore and I did not want to disturb their peace. I was reading and listening a lot of interviews done before. It was well documented part of Finnish history and there has been solid media coverage every year around the independence day so finding the material was easy.

- Let’s explore some of the tracks, starting from “Born from Fire”. In my opinion, this song is the main focus of the album: “Death walks towards you in these woods/And turns this forest into a pyre” or “Lead them into the wild/Cut their line of supply/Prevent them from reinforcing the lines/Wait for the cold/Let ferocious breeze pierce to their bones/Death walks our trail as we go forth”. What I understand about this song is that the Finns used their knowledge of the territory and their habit to the freezing temperatures to make more casualties in the Russian army. Is it correct?
This is correct. It was enemy soil in all possible meaning of the word for Russians. It was rough timing since it was one of the coldest winter of those times. Even Finnish school kids had to go to school with skis traveling over 20km in a day thru snowy forests and fields so it was nothing new to us and Finnish soldier knew how to handle the cold and travel fast and silent. There is a reason why still for example US special forces come to train in Finnish Lapland in the north.

- You often concern to the fire: in some of your videos the set is on fire - literally! -, there are songs with titles like “Born from Fire” and “Horizon on Fire” or again verses like “Withstand and Defy/Cold flame of the winter” (“Hail of Steel”). But it’s not always about actual fire, it symbolize something else, something "from within": am I right?
It can mean the fire within, physical pain like cold flame of the winter would cause, the chaos of war of just the fire itself. Fire is a very powerful element and also very visual one as you have noticed in our videos. And it is fun to burn stuff up hahah :)

>>> "HAIL OF STEEL" VIDEO <<<

- In the review I wrote: "If there is a band that brings the frost of the Nordic lands to music, it’s Wolfheart". It’s something that transpires for example in “Hail of Steel” along with a real tribute to Finnish spirit; I’m talking about the words “Northers never kneel/Winterborns don’t bow before the enemy”. Can you tell us something about this spirit and if it comes out also in these days, during this current World’s situation?
The strongest example of that spirit is the winter war times but we have own word for that and it is called ”Sisu” so it is something very Finnish. Being a farmer in Finland on those times with long and cold winter and short summer made our past generations familiar with perseverance but current generations have grown a bit softer. If they were the wolves I guess we are the teddy bears of Karelia :). I try to keep the flag of sisu high on these days and in everything I do

- Another song that impressed me is “Arrows of Chaos”, in which you wrote: “With blood on your hands/Baptized as a murderer/Death toll as a cross/Reborn as a ruthless Executioner”. Who are the murderers, the Russians or you mean the Finnish army?
Well basically both but the meaning the that line and the song is the guilt that many Finnish soldiers carried thru their whole life after the war. Many of them were just simple farmers and even when they knew what had to be done to protect their families and home it felt like murdering fellow men to some of the soldiers. War is over but you still remembers some of the faces of the enemies killed. That can make you as an executioner out of you when you look at the mirror and trying to make sense to what has happened and what you have gone thru.

- “Ashes” appears like the end of all the fights, talking of what’s left after the war (“The fires scorched this earth/From the ashes we unearth/Our fallen brothers/We bring them home/Each one forged into a stone/Each name to be remembered”). What’s behind the lyrics of this song?
There is still few groups who go to the Russian side of the border every summer to sears the remains of the fallen Finnish soldiers and one of the stories I heard was about this over 90 year old veteran who never knew what happened to his friend who got wounded and left in the trench when they had to retrieve. Finally one of the search groups found him on the place in the corner of the ruins of the trench where this veteran remembered him getting wounded. They brought his remains home and got to have proper funeral and give some kind of a closure to this veteran knowing that his friend was finally brought home.

- Is it correct to say that “Wolves of Karelia” is the heaviest Wolfheart’s album so far?
It is. You can double check that from our Drummer Joonas but it has the heaviest and fastest songs we have ever recorded. More aggressive approach worked better with the theme but at least to my ears the new album became to be also the most ”victorious” when it comes to melodies and overall mood of the album.

- For the first time since Wolfheart became a full band, there was a line-up change: how did you find and choose Vagelis Karzis?
I saw him the first time in action with Rotting Christ 2018 when we played on a same festival and was blown away. I asked him for some session duties already during 2019 but he was still busy with RC. Finally we got to tour together last summer and chemistry worked really well and we asked him to join full time when we played in Dubai. Lucky for us he said yes :)

>>> "THE HAMMER" VIDEO <<<

- How are you experiencing the current situation, during the Covid-19 emergency?
Everything is naturally very complicated now and we already had to move North American tour from march-april to 2021 and probably we will loose all festival gigs so it is a big hit for album promotion and to the band in general.

- What will your next moves be? Have you already scheduled - or reschedlued - any tours?
We already did a virtual gig that went really well but was also very weird thing to do when there was complete absence of the energy between the audience and the band. There was also about 50 gigs already booked for September - December but next few weeks will show will it be possible to play those either so slowly moving the focus already to 2021 and 2022. Next we are planning to produce some cool video material for the fans to post on Facebook and YouTube to give some entertainment for the fans in lockdown and also keep us active and connected with the fans since can’t really go and say hi at the merch table now
