Venticinque anni di carriera, un undicesimo album, "Totenritual", in uscita tra dieci giorni: i Belphegor sono tra i nomi di spicco della scena estrema mondiale. In vista dell'uscita del nuovo album (qui la recensione), abbiamo intervista il fondatore e cantante/chitarrista Helmuth. E, come sempre, non ha avuto peli sulla lingua

Salve Helmuth e grazie per il tuo tempo. “Totenritual” è il vostro undicesimo album: quali sono le vostre sensazioni su questo disco?
Tutto alla grande qui al momento, stiamo facendo tanto lavoro di pre-promozione per il nuovo album e distruggendo festival estivi.
Non vediamo l'ora che questo undicesimo lavoro dei Belphegor sia rilasciato. Ci sono stati molti sacrifici personali mentre scrivevamo e registravamo quest'album in particolare. Possiamo dire che abbiamo raggiunto un nuovo livello di estremismo e sviluppato il nostro sound feroce. Io sono assolutamente soddisfatto del risultato di tutto riguardo questo progetto.

Quest’anno raggiungerete il traguardo dei 25 anni di carriera: come si sono evoluti i Belphegor dagli esordi ad oggi? E quanto diversa è la scena ora rispetto al passato?
Sì, sembra ancora non reale e lo considero un onore, sai sono orgoglioso d’essere sopravvissuto per decenni ed ancora suoniamo Metal e siamo forti come mai prima. Odio l'immobilità, quindi tutto va alla grande ora che ci siamo portati ad un nuovo livello come musicisti e come band.
Sai, sono ancora "on fire" a pronto per nuove sfide ed esperimenti col sound, provare nuove cose. Non m'importa tanto cosa fanno altri artisti o l'opinione degli altro. Supporto quello che mi piace ed ignoro il resto. Vivo il mio mondo con le mie regole. Tutto ciò al di fuori di questo veramente non m'importa più di tanto. Adoro il silenzio e la solitudine... nel mio mondo misantropico con le mie regole.

Hai definito “Totenritual” come il disco più brutale che avete mai inciso. Cosa dovremo aspettarci quindi da quest’album?
E' assolutamente così. Aspettatevi un album intenso e violento con un eccezione muro di suono, opera di Jason Suecof e masterizzato da Mark Lewis agli Audiohammer Studios in Florida, USA. Abbiamo ottenuto la creazione del nostro album più brutale finora con un tono maligno e oscuro e vibrazioni rituali, esattamente come si eravamo preposti. Mi ispiro a tutto ciò che vedo e vivo. Abbiamo incontrato molte persone diverse in giro per il mondo. Le persone che sono matte sono sempre le più interessanti. Sono affascinanti anche quelli che vivono in maniera differente dal tipo comune di persone. Tutto quello che è oscuro, anti e non-conformista ottiene la mia attenzione. Ho avuto molte opportunità durante la mia vita d'imparare che la vita reale è spesso più strana di qualsiasi finzione. Ed è questo che mi ha ispirato a cominciare a scrivere quest'album speciale, intitolato "Totenritual". La morte è ovunque, i demoni volteggiano su di noi, semplicemente aspettano...

La vostra peculiarità è un sound a cavallo tra il Death ed il Black, ma sempre contraddistinto da una certa “oscurità”. “Totenritual” non è un’eccezione, giusto?
Cambia sempre quando comincio un nuovo progetto con la truppa. Bloodhammer, il nostro nuovo batterista, suona con uno stile molto tecnico, quindi con lui nell'ovile siamo stati in grado di migliorarci come band e musicisti, provare nuove cose e renderle più fresche simultaneamente. Anche mr. Serpenth ha tracciato la miglior performance al absso da quanto è nella band.
Non abbiamo mai avuto così tanti breaks e fills e piccoli dettagli aggiunti alle nostre canzoni che le han migliorate. Questo è il nostro album più tecnico finora. E' grande, tutto spinge ai limiti di quanto abbiamo fatto prima e ancora e ancora pisciamo sul mainstream con il nostro retaggio e l'attitudine

E’ solo una mia impressione, o il primo singolo, “Baphomet” è più Death-oriented?
Questa volta abbiamo accordato le chitarre molto più in basso di prima, in modo da trovare un diverso tono più basso. E' stata una grande decisione e ha aperto un nuovo mondo nel mio modo di suonare e nel processo di songwriting, è un altro stato di estremismo sonoro. Detesto restrizioni o ristagnamenti. Cerchiamo sempre di sfidare noi stessi, sai. Lo facciamo per cambiare il processo di scrittura, gli studios, produttore etc. Lavoriamo con una varietà di persone differenti nel team di registrazione per ogni album. Questo ci dà automaticamente un suono distinto per ogni release.
Con "Embracing Star" abbiamo sperimentato cercando nuove cose negli arrangiamenti, aggiungendo cori di monaci, parti parlate, grunts e growls, anche chitarre acustiche. "Swinefever" è probabilmente la traccia più brutale e blasfema nel nuovo album, mentre l'inno dalle influenze classiche "The Devil's Son" è la canzone più veloce che abbiamo mai registrato.

Le vostre tematiche sono sempre estreme, ma avete sempre specificato che è un errore definirvi una band “Satanic Black Metal” come spesso accade: cosa puoi dirci?
Siamo ancora nemici della croce, non c'inginocchiamo, strisciamo né preghiamo alcun dio.
Da decenni usiamo molti poemi originali, da vecchi libri etc. Consiste in incantesimi, poemi, canti e così via, la maggior parte nella lingua originale in modo da non rovinare o distogliere l'attenzione dal significato inteso... Ecco perché i nostri contenuti lirci sono scritti in inglese, latino e tedesco.
I versi in tedesco suonano molto duri nella pronuncia e forniscono una sensazione brutale ed atmosferica, come puoi sentire in "Apophis - Black Dragon". E' anche una specie di trademark unico che usiamo tre lingue e lo facciamo dal 1994.
Nei nostri testi ho sempre usato la filosofia che vede Satana/Lucifero - il Portatore di Luce come un'orgogliosa, esaltata, maestosa figura che ha resistito contro ogni altra influenza. Quest'archetipo è il solo a prendere le sue decisioni da solo, camminare il suo sentiero da ribelle, che si fa beffe delle masse. Mi descrivo come un ateo con tendenze verso il nichilismo. Voglio dire, c'è molto d'oscurità e possesione nei Belphegor e sempre c'è stato.
"The Devil's Son" parla della storia della vita del violinista italiano Niccolò Paganini, scritta dal suo punto di vista. Aveva una pelle pallida e vestiva sempre di nero. La sua virtuosa tecnica violinistica, la velocità inumana con cui suonava e la (demonica) precisione tecnica, il suo aspetto con lunghi arti, dita e giunture agili, hanno portato le persone all'idea che fosse posseduto ed avesse fatto un patto con il diavolo. Molto interessante, davvero... La canzone è esplosiva con chitarre ultra veloci ed arrangiamenti influenzati dalla Classica. Non voglio rivelare di più qui, quindi dovrete aspettare, ascoltare e capire.
"Apophis - Black Dragon", il signore dell'oscurità e del caos, il drago nero, indistruttibile, se guardi nei suoi occhi per troppo tempo muori. E' anche summenzionato per essere il più antico nemico del dio del sole Ra nella mitologia egizia, ha molti versi in tedesco.
"Swinefever - Regent of Pigs", credo non debba dire molto al riguardo - il titolo dice tutto. Pura blasfemia contro l'ipocrita istituzione chiamata chiesa.
"Baphomet" è il creatore di tutto. L'arrangiamento parla della dualità della vita: uomo-donna, fuoco-acqua, umano-demone, amore-odio etc. Parla anche del volere, di disciplina, libertà ed il desiderio di camminare la propria strada "da soli", senza che qualcun altro decida cose relative alla tua vita - per svilupparsi come umano, magia sessuale e creazione di sé stessi.

Quest’autunno ci sarà l’”European Totenritual Crusade”, che vi vedrà in tour per l’Europa insieme a Deströyer666, Enthroned, Nervochaos e Nordjevel. Cosa puoi dirci a riguardo? Avete in mente qualcosa di speciale? E soprattutto: passerete anche in Italia? (mezz’ora dopo l’invio delle domande sono uscite le date del tour europeo, n.d.Ogre)
Stiamo programmando di girare il mondo come sempre, passando per posti dove siamo già stati ed anche territori nuovi. Per esempio, nell'ultimo paio d'anni siamo stati in Indonesia, Filippine, Cina, India, Bolivia, Sudafrica... La lista è infinita, amico.
Sì, come sempre faremo un Rituale italiano anche. E' sempre grandioso nella vostra nazione, quindi noi non faremo mai e poi mai un tour semza fermarci anche in Italia. Mi getto letteralmente sul cibo italiano e quand'ero giovane sono venuto spesso in vacanza nella vostra bellissima nazione.

Comunque sia, un concerto dei Belphegor oggi è un rituale. Nel momento in cui sento il sangue sulla mia pelle, sento l'intro, l'odore d'incenso, la mia mente passa ad un'altra zone della realtà e discendo in un altro regno. Adoro lasciare il mio corpo per più di un'ora durante una performance live dei Belphegor, lasciando che i demoni prendano il controllo ed entrino in possesso della musica, è un piacere. Quasi vengo se la cerimonia è perfetta ed il pubblico impazzisce e diventa selvaggia, mentre glorifica. Spesso c'è Magia tra la band e la gente, quelle sono le cerimonie più intense, se senti il sudore, l'oscurità, il sangue... allora siamo capaci di dar fuoco alle nostre tracce con la massima e feroce intensità nell'orda.

Ti ringrazio ancora per il tempo e l’intervista concessaci e lascio a te le ultime parole. Cosa vuoi dire ai vostri fans italiani?
Grazie per lo spazio. Vorrei anche menzione che la versione digipack dell'album avrà due bonus tracks dal vivo, registrate questo in aprile di quest'anno all'Inferno Festival di Oslo, Norvegia, "Gasmask Terror" presa dall'album "Conjuring the Dead", e "Stigma Diabolicum" presa dall'album "Bondage Goat Zombie". Hi Helmuth and thanks for your time. "Totenritual" is your 11th Full-length: what are your impressions about it?
All great here at the moment, we have been doing a lot of press pre-promotional work for the new LP and shredding Summer Festivals.
We cannot wait to release this eleventh BELPHEGOR offering. There have been many personal sacrifices on the way while writing and recording this particular album. We can say we reached the next level of extremity and developed our savage sound. I am absoltely satisfied with the outcome of everything regarding this project.

Next year you’ll reach the 25th year of your career: how evolved Belphegor since the beginnings? And how different is the Metal scene compared at that time?
Yes, it still feels unreal and I consider it an honor, you know I'm proud that I managed to survive decades and still play the Metal of Death and we are stronger than ever before. I hate stagnation, so everything is great at the moment as we have managed to bring ourselves up to the next level as musicians and as a band.
You know, I am still on fire and ready for new challenges and experiments with sound, to try new things. I don't care that much what other artists do or the opinions of others. I support what I like and ignore the rest. I live in my own world with my own rules. Anything on the outside of that doesn't really matter that much to me. I adore silence and solitude,...in my own misanthropic world with my own rules.

You told that "Totenritual" is the most brutal album you ever made. What we should expect from it?
It definitely is. Expect an intense and vicious album with a brilliant soundwall, forged by Jason Suecof and mastered by Mark Lewis in the Audiohammer studios in Florida, USA. We achieved the creation of our most brutal album to date with an evil and obscure tone and a Ritual vibe, exactly as we set out to accomplish.  I'm inspired by everything I see and experience. We meet a lot of different people on the road worldwide. People who are insane are always the most interesting. Fascinating are also those who live different than the average types of people. Everything that is dark, anti and non-conformist grabs my attention. I had many chances during my life to learn and get to know that real life is often way stranger than any fiction. And that is what inspired me to start writing this special album, entitled TOTENRITUAL. Death is everywere, the demons hovering above us all, they just wait..

Your peculiarity is a harsh sound between Death and Black Metal, but it's always marked by a certain "obscurity". I suppose "Totenritual" is not an exception, am I right?
It's always challenging when I start a new project with the troop. Bloodhammer, our new drummer plays a very technical style so with him in the fold, we were able to improve as band and as musicians and try new things and keep it all fresh simultaneously. Also Mr. Serpenth tracked the best bass performance since he has been in the band.
We never have had so many breaks and fills, and small details added to our songs that serve to enhance. This is our most technical album so far. It's great, everything pushes the limits of anything we have done before and still pissing in the mainstream with our legacy and attitude.

It's just my impression, or the first single, "Baphomet", is more Death-oriented?
This time we tuned our guitars even more down than before, so we reached a different low-end tone.  It was a great decision and it opened a new world in my guitar playing and for the songwritting process, it is another state of extremities soundwise. I despise  restriction or stagnation. We always try to challenge ourselves you know. We do this by changing up the writing process, the studios, producer etc. We work with a variety of different people on the recording team for each album. This automatically gives each release a distinct sound. 
With EMBRACING A STAR we experimented with trying new things with the arrangements, added monk choirs, spoken words, grunts and growls, also acoustic guitars. SWINEFEVER is probably the most brutal – blasphemic track on the new LP, while the classical influenced hymn THE DEVIL´S SON is the fastest song we ever recorded.

Your lyrical themes are always extreme, but you specified that is a mistake define you as a "Satanic Black Metal" band: what can you say about?
We are still enemies to the cross, we dont kneel down, crawl nor pray to any god. 
We have been using a lot of original poems for decades, from old books etc. These consist of spells, poems, chants and so on, mostly in the original language in order to not deface or detract from the intended meaning… that's why our lyrical content is written and sung in English, Latin and the German language as well.
German verses also sound very harsh in pronunciation and lend a brutal feeling and atmosphere as you can hear in „APOPHIS – BLACK DRAGON“. It's also a kind of unique trademark that we use three languages and we've been doing that since 1994.
I’ve always used the philosophy about Sathan/ Lucifer - the Light-bearer in our lyrical content as a proud, exalted, majestic figure who resisted against all outer influences.  This archetype is one to make his own decisions, walk his own path as a rebel, as a mocker of the masses. I describe myself as an atheist with tendencies towards nihilism. I mean, there is a lot of obscurity and possession in BELPHEGOR, and there always was.
“THE DEVIL´S SON” deals with the life story of the Italian violinist Niccolo Paganini, written from his point of view. He had very pale skin and always dressed in black  His virtuoso violin technic, inhumanly fast playing and (demonic) technique of precision and his appearance with his long limbs, nimble fingers, and joints led people to the idea that he must have been possessed and had a pact with the devil. Very interesting indeed… The song is blasting with ultra fast shredding guitars and a classical influenced arrangement. I don’t want to reveal more here so you will have to wait, listen and understand.
„APOHPIS – BLACK DRAGON“ the ruler of darkness and chaos, the black dragon, undestroyable, if you look  into his eyes for too long then you die. He is also mentioned to be the oldest enemy of the sungod Ra in Egyptian mythology, comes with a lot German verses.
„SWINEFEVER – REGENT OF PIGS“, I guess I dont have to say a lot about it - the title says it all. Pure blasphemy against the hypocritical institution called church.
„BAPHOMET“ is the creator of everything. The arrangement deals with the duality of life. Man-Woman. Fire-Water. Human-Demon, Love - Hate etc. It’s also about will, discipline, freedom and the will to walk your own way „alone“ without letting someone else decide things relating to your life – to develop as human, sex magick and self creation.

This next autumn there will be the "Totenritual European Crusade", in which you'll tour across Europe with Deströyer666, Enthroned, Nervochaos and Nordjevel. What could you say, will you have something special for this next tour? Abd above all: will you came in Italy, too? (Half an hour after I sent this interview, they announced the European tour gigs, n.d.Ogre)
We plan to keep playing and touring the world as always, experiencing places we have already been before and also march into new territories. For instance, last couple years we marched into Indonesia, Philippines, China, India, Bolivia, South Africa… The list is endless man.
Yes as always we will do an Italy Ritual as well. It's always great in your country, so we never ever would play a tour without stopping in Italy. I dig the Italian food as well, as when I was younger I often went on vacation in your beautiful country.

Anyways, a BELPHEGOR concert nowadays is a Ritual. As soon as I feel the blood on my skin, I hear the intro, smell the incense, my mind switches to another zone of reality and I descend into another realm. I adore leaving my body for more than one hour during a BELPHEGOR stage performance, letting the demons take over and get into total possession with the music, it's a pleasure. I almost cum if the ceremony is great and the audience get crazy and wild, while glorifying. Often it is Magick between the band and the people, those are the most intense ceremonies, if you feel the sweat the obscurity – the blood… than we are able and can fire our tracks with the uttermost ferocious intensity into the horde.

I thank you again for your time and this interview. I leave to you the last words: would you say something to your Italian fans?
Thank you for the space. I also wanna mention that the digipak version of the album comes with two bonus live tracks, recorded in April this year at Inferno festival in Oslo/ Norway with the titles „GASMASK TERROR“ taken from CONJURING THE DEAD LP and „STIGMA DIABOLICUM“ taken from BONDAGE GOAT ZOMBIE LP.
