Sono ad oggi considerati una delle maggiori realtà nella storia del Progressive Death, con Obscura e Necrophagist. I canadesi Beyond Creation hanno da poco rilasciato il nuovo album "Algorythm" su Season of Mist (qui la nostra recensione) e per l'occasione abbiamo rivolto alcune domande al leader Simon Girard.

- "Algorythm" è uscito da qualche giorno: come sono stati i primi responsi?
Il responso è stato incredibilmente buono. Sembra che la gente abbia apprezzato il nostro nuovo album e questa è la cosa più gratificante che potessimo desiderare. Noi creiamo musica con cuore e passione, quindi è assolutamente magnifico vedere le reazioni dei nostri fans ed anche delle persone che non ci avevano mai sentito prima e che ci stanno scoprendo con il nuovo album
- Se me lo permetti, vorrei spendere un paio di parole sul nuovo bassista, Hugo Doyon-Karout. Sembra che suoni come se non sentisse il peso di sostituire Dominic Lapointe (lo devo dire: uno dei miei bassisti preferiti di sempre); e questo è fantastico, considerando la sua giovane età! Quindi com'è stato lavorare con lui?
E' un musicista veramente talentuoso, uno che lavora duro ed un ragazzo scrupoloso. Siamo più che felici di averlo nella band ed anche del risultato del suo lavoro nell'album. Hugo e Kevin sono vicini di casa sin da ragazzini, quindi sono cresciuti assieme. Hugo è sempre stato attorno la band, quindi lo conoscevamo da molto tempo prima che entrasse nei Beyond Creation.
- Com'è stato l'approccio nello scrivere il nuovo album? E' stato differente rispetto al passato?
Il processo di scrittura è stato quasi lo stesso, tranne che per poche differenze che hanno aiutato molto in efficienza. Scrivo le canzoni partendo dalle due chitarre, le arie e le atmosfere, registrando tutto a casa. Questa è la parte più lunga, perché ci vogliono anche mesi di lavoro prima che senta che la canzone sia completa e sia come la voglio. Dopodiché mando le canzoni a tutti i musicisti così che possano sentirle e possano prendere familiarità con le parti. Lo step successivo è suonare con ogni musicista separatamente, così che possa spiegare loro in dettaglio cosa sto cercando e quale sia il significato di ogni riff ed ogni sequenza. Suono anche la batteria e un po' il basso, quindi ho sempre una buona idea di cosa ricerco. Così una volta che tutti conoscono nel dettaglio tutte le parti, creano i loro arrangiamenti ed aggiungo il loro stile personale, ravvivando le loro parti. Infine scrivo i testi e li incorporo alle canzoni. Kevin ha scritto i testi di due canzoni che si adattano con il concept dell'album. La sostanziale differenza nel processo di scrittura è che registro tutto col click dall'inizio. Così con tempo e pratica, sono stato in grado di adattare il tempo giusto per tutte le parti. 5bpm possono cambiare tutto in un groove o nella percezione, così ho come l'impressione che ci sia più controllo rispetto a prima. La produzione risulta essere più facile ed efficiente. C'è anche il fatto che abbiamo i giusti mezzi per creare un'ottima pre-produzione prima di entrare in studio. Ognuno può lavorare e prepararsi, il tutto ad un livello migliore.
- Anche in "Algorythm" c'è una canzone in francese. Credi ce ne saranno di più in futuro? Sembra una cosa ottima, per me.
Grazie, mi fa piacere ti piaccia. Sin dagli inizi, ho sentito fosse importante per me inserire testi in francese in ogni album, visto che è la nostra lingua principale e ha il proprio partiolare sound e carattere. Il francese è una bella lingua. Anche dal punto di vista artistico, mi offre la sfida e l'opportunità di creare qualcosa che sia differente dal resto delle canzoni.
- Una delle cose che ho amato di "Algorythm" è la copertina: puoi dirci qualcosa riguardo il concept dell'artwork e dei testi?
Stavamo cercando qualcosa di diverso per questo nuovo album. Avevo un certo mood nella mente, ma ci ho messo un po' a trovare l'immagine giusta che andasse bene con la musica e le atmosfere. Ho cercato tra molti quadri e digital arts e ho trovato questa creata da Tierno Beauregard. Quando l'ho vista, sapevo che fosse quella che avrebbe rappresentato l'album al meglio. Tutti i membri se ne sono innamorati. L'illustrazione si adatta anche ai temi lirici. Molti dei temi sono sul modo di interagire l'un l'altro, l'impatto delle nostre parole e delle nostre decisioni nel tempo, sull'ambiente ed altri dei maggiori problemi che stiamo affrontando in questa nostra era. Mi piace scrivere testi in maniera filosofica, perché la bellezza dell'arte è che puoi ricevere il messaggio ed interpretarlo nella maniera che si adatta al tuo mondo, la tua vita e le tue esperienze. C'è anche questo piglio di scrittura che parla riguardo i vari problemi, ma tende anche a spingere verso un lato ottimistico, perché c'è sempre una soluzione ai nostri problemi. Le difficoltà non durano per sempre, devi solo agire ed accettare il cambio della situazione in cui sei/siamo. Entrambi i testi scritti da Kevin calzano a pennello col tema principale perché parlano di astrologia e dell'effetto che ha sulla nostra civiltà. Il secondo (che è l'ultima canzone dell'album) è più come una storia di fantasia che parla di organismi geneticamente modificati e le conseguenze nel creare tecnologie che possono superare gli umani.

- Guardando indietro a questi 13 anni di carriera, come descriveresti la storia dei Beyond Creation fino ad ora?
La descriverei come un viaggio incredibilmente divertente ed impegnativo! Ho vissuto e sperimentato cose che non avrei mai creduto possibili tempo fa. Quando cominci a fare musica, lasci che sia la tua anima a parlare e le tue passioni ad essere nutrite, ed anche se tutti noi abbiamo sognato di vivere una vita da artisti, non puoi mai sapere cosa succederà finché non sta succedendo. Noi facciamo questo col cuore e sono assolutamente grato del supporto che riceviamo dai nostri fans. Mi sento fortunato a vivere tutto questo e vedere la nostra carriera progredire ogni giorno... anche se stiamo lavorando duramente tutti i giorni per essere dove siamo ora.
- E cosa pensi riserverà il futuro per la band? Hai qualche desiderio in particolare?
Ovviamente non possiamo predire cosa accadrà, ma siamo estremamente convinti del nostro nuovo album e sappiamo che avremo grandi opportunità in futuro. Desidero solo di suonare magnifici spettacoli, conoscere molti fans e condividere il palco con gruppi che adoro. E mi piacerebbe anche che questo genere di musica possa essere conosciuto ed ascoltato da più persone negli anni. E' un genere che ha tanta varietà, struttura e non ha limiti. Suoni e componi quello che ami, senza pensare se è Metal o no. E' musica.
- Sembra che il Canada sia terreno fertile per il Progressive ed il technical Death. Penso a gruppi come voi, Cryptopsy, Augury e molti altri. Come vedi la costante evoluzione di questo movimento?
Sì, la scena metal qui è veramente molto solida e ci sono sempre nuove bands che si formano e progrediscono. E' fico! Potrebbe essere per il nostro pazzo inverno che ci costringere nella pratica hahaha! Ed il fatto che l'arte in generale è solida qui. Credo che alle persone piaccia spingere i propri limiti in molti aspetti. La musica Progressive è sempre stata parte di Montreal sin dagli anni '70, così che ha sempre avuto un grosso impatto nel tempo.
- A proposito di questo: c'è stata una band (o più) che hanno ispirato i Beyond Creation agli inizi?
Sì, certamente. Il primo gruppo extreme metal che abbia mai conosciuto sono stati i Quo Vadis, una band di Montreal. Mi hanno realmente ispirato durante gli anni perché hanno creato una musica che ancora oggi suona originale e nuova. Poi ho scoperto i Martyr, che avevano un sound unico e magnifico. Loro hanno aperto la mia mente a qualcosa di nuovo, ed infine i Necrophagist hanno avuto un enorme impatto sulle mie composizioni e sull'approccio verso il Death Metal.
- Ho letto che sei un fotografo professionista. Ci diresti qualcosa riguardo questa tua passione extra-musicale? Hai qualche suggerimento per i ragazzi che si approcciano a questa arte?
Sì, la fotografia è la mia seconda passione e devo dire che mi ha cambiato la vita. Il modo in cui vedo le cose, i colori e le composizioni in generale- La musica si adatta realmente all'arte visuale e questo è qualcosa che mi ispira moltissimo. Questo è anche il motivo per cui mi sono occupato di tutti i layout, concetti e fotografie per il nostro nuovo album. - Il prossimo mese sarete on the road di nuovo per il tour in Europa e UK (con i Gorod): cosa dovrà aspettarsi il pubblico?
Siamo veramente emozionati per l'imminente EU/UK Tour 2018. Sarà una magnifico ed unico giro cui avrete la possibilità di assistere una sola volta in vita. Un'esperienza tutta nuova, suonando il nuovo album dal primo all'ultimo pezzo con un live setup completamente nuovo e concept visivi. Sicuramente non vorrete perdervi questo tour!
- Vuoi dire qualcosa ai fans italiani che accorreranno agli spettacoli di Retorbido e Venezia?
Non vediamo seriamente l'ora di incontrarvi, ragazzi, e di suonare in questo spettacoli. Portate amici e familiari, saranno sicuramente delle serate magnifiche!

- E com'è stato il tour in Nord America con Obscura e Archspire?
E' stato assolutamente magnifico! Ci siamo divertiti tantissimo. Ottimi spettacoli, ottimo pubblico e un pacchetto (di band, n.d.r.) solido. E' stato bello suonare di nuovo in Nord America dopo due anni e rivedere vecchi amici e fans di vecchia data.
- Quali sono i vostri piani dopo il tour in Europa e UK?
Avremo il release show del nostro album a Montreal l'8 dicembre. Questo è il modo migliore di chiudere l'anno, suonando "Algorythm" per intero e celebrando la nostra nuova release con gli amici, i familiari, i fans e una buona dose di Death Metal!

Nowadays the're considered as one of the most important Progressive Death Metal acts of all time, together with Obscura and Necrophagist. Canadian Beyond Creation had recently released their third album, "Algorythm", via Season of Mist, and now we've made some questions to Simon Girard.
- Hi Simon and welcome to Allaroundmetal.com’s pages. First of all, thank you for your availability! Congratulations for “Algorythm”: it sound really great!

- “Algorythm” has been out for a few days, now: how were the first responses?
The response is insanely good. People really seems to dig our new album and it is the most rewarding thing we could ever wish for. We create music with heart and passion so it’s absolutely awesome to see the reaction of our fans and also the people that never heard of and which are discovering the band with our new album.
- If you let me, I want to spend a few words about new bassist, Hugo Doyon-Karout:. It seems that he plays like he doesn't feel the burden of replacing Dominic Lapointe (I must say: one of my favourite bassists ever); and that’s amazing considering his young age! So how was to work with him?
He’s a really talented musician, a hard worker and a dedicated guy. We are more than happy to have him in the band and also with the result of his work on the album. Hugo and Kevin was neighbors since their young age so they grew up together. Hugo always been around the band and so we knew him long time before he join the Beyond Creation.
- How was the approach to writing the new album? Was it different compared to the past?
The writing process was quite the same except for few differences that helped a lot on efficiency. I writing the songs starting with both guitars, ambiances and atmospheres and I record them at my place. This is the longest part because it can take few months of work before I feel like the songs is completed and the way I want it. Then I send the songs to all musicians so they can listen to it and get familiar with all the parts. The next step is to jam separately with every musicians so I can explain them in details what I’m looking for and what’s the meaning of every riffs and progressions. I play drums and a bit of bass so I always have a pretty good idea of what I’m looking for. So once everyone knows in detail all the parts, they creates their arrangements and add their own style and spices to their parts. Finally I write the lyrics and incorporate them in the songs. Kevin wrote lyrics on 2 of the songs which really fits the concept of the album. The main differences in writing process is that I recorded every songs on clicks from the begigning. So with time and practice, I was able to really fits the good tempo to the parts. 5 bpm can change everything on a groove or a feel so I feel like this is way more controlled than before. The production been way more easier and efficient. There’s also the fact that we had the right tools to create a good pre production before entering the real studio. Everyone could work and get prepared, and this on a better level.
- Also in “Algorythm” there is a song in French language. Do you think there may be more in the future? It feels like it sounds very good, to me.
Thank you, I’m glad you like it. Since the begining, I felt like it is important for me to put French lyrics on every album because it is our main language and it really has it’s own sound and character. French is a beautiful language. Also on an artistic point of view, it gives me a challenge and an opportunity to create somethings that sounds and feels different from the rest of the songs.
- One of the things I loved of “Algorythm” is the cover: can you say something about the artwork’s concept and the lyrics?
We were looking for something different for this new album. I had a certain mood in mind but it took me a while to find the right image to really fit the music and atmospheres. I was looking through many different paints and digital arts and I found this one created by Tierno Beauregard. When I seen it, I knew it was the one that would represent the album as it’s best. All members felt in love with it. The visual also fits the lyrical themes. Most lyrical themes are about the way we interact to each other, the impacts of our words and decisions through time, environment and some of the major problems we are facing through our current era. I like to create lyrics in a philosophical way because the beauty of art is that you can receive the message and interpret it the way it fits your world, your own life and experiences. There also this writing manner which he talks about the problems but also tend to push on the optimist side of it because there’s always solutions to our problems. Problems never last for ever, you just need to take actions and accept to change the situation you/we are in. Both texts Kevin wrotes fits the main theme because it talks about astrology and the effect that it had on our civilisations. The second one (which is the last song of the album) is more like a fictive story which talks about genetically modified organisms and the consequences of creating technologies that can surpass humans.
- Looking back at these 13 years of career, how would you describe the Beyond Creation's history so far?
I would describe it as an incredibly fun and challenging journey! I lived and experimented things that I would never thought possible back in the days. When you start playing music, you let your soul speaks and your passion be nourished and even if we all dreamed about living an artist’s life, you can never know what’s gonna happen until it’s happening. We do this with heart and I am absolutely grateful to see all the support we receive from our fans and people. I feel lucky to live all of this and see our career progressing every day…even if we are working really hard to be where we are right now.
- And what do you think will reserve the future for the band? Do you have any particular wishes?
Of course we can’t predict what’s gonna happen but we are really confident with our new album and I know we’ll have great opporunities in future. I just wish to play awesome shows and meet more fans and share the stage with bands that I love. I would also wish that this genre of music get known and listen by more people over the years. It’s a genre that have a lot of variety, textures and it doesn’t have boundaries. You play and compose what you love regardless if it’s metal or not. It’s music.
- It seems that Canada is a fertile ground for Progressive & Technical Death Metal. I think to bands like you, Cryptopsy, Augury and many, many others. How do you see the constant evolution of this movement?
Yes the metal scene here is really strong and there’s always new bands that are forming up and progressing. That’s really cool! This might be our crazy cold winter that keeps us practicing hahaha and the fact that art in general is really strong here. I think that people likes to push boundaries in many aspects. Progressive music always been part of Montreal since the 70’s so it’s surely impacted the scene here over time.
- About that: there was a band (or more) that inspired Beyond Creation’s sound at the beginning?
Yes of course, my first extreme metal band I discovered was ‘Quo Vadis’, a band from Montreal. They really inspired me over the years because they created music that still to this day, original and sound refreshing. Then I discovered ‘Martyr’ wich really had a unique and awesome sound. They opended my mind to something new and finally Necrophagist really had a huge impact on my composition and approch towards death metal.
- I’ve read that you’re a professional photographer. Would you like to tell us something about this your extra-musical passion? Any advices to the guys that are approaching this art?
Yes photography is my second passion and I must say that it changed my life. The way I see things, colors and composition in general. Music really fits visual art and that’s something that inspire me a lot. This is also the reason I did all the layout, conception and photography for our new album. It allow me to push further my artistic visions. I also do exhibitions with my photographs. Bringing my art alive by printing them on different materials like Aluminium, Acrylic, Canvas and Papers. - Next month you’ll be on the road again with the EU/UK Tour (with Gorod): what should the audience expect?
We are really excited about the upcoming Algorythm EU/UK 2018 tour. This will be an amazing and unique run which you'll only have the chance to witness once in your life. A whole new experience, playing our new album from first to last with a complete new live setup and visual concept. You definitely don't want to miss that tour!
- Would you say something to the Italian fans that will be at the shows of Retorbido and Venice?
We are really looking forward to see you guys and play these shows. Bring your friends and family, this will be amazing nights for sure!
- And how was the North America tour with Obscura and Archspire?
It was absolutely awesome! We really had a lot of fun. Good shows, good crowds and a solid package. It was nice to play North America again after 2 years and see some of our friends and old time fans.
- What are your next plans after the EU/UK tour?
We have our album’s release show here in Montreal on December 8th. This is be the best way to end the year, playing ‘Algorythm’ in it’s entirety and celebrating our new release with friends, family, fans and a good amount of death metal!
